New to Guild Wars
Hi Everyone! I just started the game today. Before I choose a secondary profession I wanted to ask for suggestions, and the pro's & con's of certain ones. I was reading about ranger and that seems like it might compliment assassin well but I'm not sure. Can someone give me some insight? Thank you in advance.

Well I'm kinda working on an assassin guide. Should've been finished by today, but I'm kinda lazy. Any profession will do. Just don't use it untill you know why. You'll learn eventually, and you can always change secondaries.

I can't wait to see your post Yanman.be.
Anyway, until he posts it, here are things to consider:
How will you play your Assassin - Do not be a tank, do not stand there and get hit.
Until you get used to your Assassin, this is what I did:
A/Mo (Assassin/Monk) - using retribution as my enchantment and using Golden Lotus Strike for my e-management. That was until I had a good enchantment from my Assassin.
A/N (Assassin/Necromancer) - I changed my profession to this so I can get a good long duration hex so I could use Black Lotus Strike. I used this so I can get to my dual attacks faster and for e-management. Once I had a good hex from my Assassin, I changed again.
A/W (Assassin/Warrior) - Currently, this is my character. I use Wild Blow to remove defensive stances and to re-new Critical Defenses. Critical hits from Wild Blow, also gives me energy and health from Way of Perfection.
Pure Assassin you'll figure out is the best way to go. Just remember, assassins do not have hex removals, and have weaker armor than a Warrior.
Good luck!

I'll try list some of the good things you can get depending on your secondary profession.
A/R Yes, you're right, they do compliment each other. There's something called a Critical Barrager, its when you use the Skill Critical Eye in conjunction with the Ranger Elite Skill Barrage. A Critical Hit would inflict more damage than normal. Imagine that, but happening almost all the time.
A/W The only Increase Attack Speed skill an Assassin has is Critical Agility, and you need the Nightfall campaign to be able to use it. Because of that, you might as well use IAS skills of a Warrior. They're all stances. Most of the time I see Tiger Stance, Flurry (requires Prophecies campaign), or Flail being used. I believe you don't have Nightfall, but once you get it, you can use Burst of Agression.
A/E You can use either Conjure Flame, Conjure Frost,
or Conjure Lightning to increase your overall Damage Per Second
Keep in mind that your weapon has to have the corresponding Weapon Upgrade to trigger the extra damage from the skill. For example, if you want to use Conjure Flame, you need to use a Fiery Dagger, and if you want to use Conjure Frost, you need to use an Icy Dagger.
A/Me You can use Arcane Echo to copy Shadow Form when you're running or when you need the extra time when you're spiking on an enemy. Overall I don't like this combination much though. If you want to run, I suggest you use a Dervish instead, but you need the NF campaign.
A/Mo Basically any of the Condition Removal helps.
A/N Not exactly a Condition Removal. It doesn't heal you, but instead transfers the negative condition to the enemy. Its a Touch skill called Plague Touch.
A/Rt... Sorry, I don't know about this one

I can't wait for the guide too.
I see many A/W dagger builds playing HB but I can't get why they use Warrior besides for Tiger Stance...

A/Rit - Channelling - Nightmare Weapon, Splinter Weapon, Wailing Weapon
- Communion - Brutal Weapon, Guided Weapon
- Restoration - Flesh Of My Flesh, Resilient Weapon, Vengeful Weapon, Weapon of Warding, Weapon of Remedy (e)
For obvious reasons, you should only take 1 weapon spell (since you can only have 1 active at a time).

Wonderfull... time to start an anti Yanman.be assassin Guide cus I could do better and *Blah blah blah, rant rant rant* :P *Cough* I'd write one too but I dont want to brag *cough*
___________
Anyhow, if your starting an assassin do not worry about secondarys, there only useful later on when your running specifics. The assassin doesn't need a secondary for anything, they have energy management, they have self defense (that other classes like to borrow) the only thing they could really need is an IAS and if you get the Guildwars Campaign NIghtfall, you will also have that for your assassin.
The basics of an assassin is to kill and then get out of there, wait till your ready again and kill again. In which case you should pick up
Recall
Aura of Displacement
If you get nightfall get Shadow Meld, its pretty good
Return
if you get Nightfall get Deaths retreat, it is also good.
These skills can Warp you out of battle to a team mate or a place you have previously been. As you start out pve be wary of skills you don't have equipment to handle, Shadow Form can be a death sentence if you don't have high enough attribute clothes or equipment to keep it up long enough.
However if you just want to go awhile
Go A/mo A/N or A/rt A/R or A/W
A/rt is if you feel you dont want regen heals and want a direct heal.
A/Mo should provide you with things like Live vicariously and ...actually don't make a A/mo off first, some of the skills can be very attribute costly until they are usuable.
A/R you do have some IAS's and you can change to use bows if you get bored of daggers.
A/W you have Ias's and you can use a Hammer, axe,Sword and shield if you get bored of daggers, just be careful and make sure you can still kill things well before trying it out in a team of real people.
A/N will reward you with hexes and Condition transfer.

PvE, I generally take A/W or A/Rt.
A/Rt gives me flesh of my flesh, and that's pretty much all I use the Rit secondary for.
A/W is useful for tanking or burst builds.
Generally I end up mostly using assassin skills though, to be perfectly hoenst.

Wow you guys gave me a ton of info to work with. That critical barrager sounds interesting later on, so for now I'll go A/R. It seems like a solid setup for PvE. I'll probably be back later to ask some more questions but thank you all for helpin out a lil noob. ^^
